they're showing the fake hand of christ there's a fake nail, too there's a fake true cross that the nail goes through through the hand through the cross through the lens through the head through the skin of the living through the not-to-be dead crying "see, don't you get it? see the blood, see the gore? this is why, this is what he was for" they're spilling the fake blood of christ on the deaf and dumb if the shock don't bring them to kingdom come the shame will through the hoops through the snares through the narrow door through the land of the living to the Evermore crying "see, don't you get it? see the blood, see the gore? this is why, this is what" some people need a sacrifice some gods do too and an us and a them and a chosen few and the whips and the nails and the spear and sword and the happy end and the dreadful Lord oh see the face of man in god and of god in man and begin to see where it all began through the pen through the Book through the blood incurred through the holy wars and through the deadly Word and ain't it awful to get it see the blood, see the gore wonder why this is what we are for some people need a sacrifice some gods do too

did abraham say anything to isaac, like "i'm killing you today better bring a coat it looks like rain" "i'm sorry i've been less than clear i tried to say i'm killing you today but it felt so awkward don't run away" "i couldn't have a better son i love you so i'm killing you today you always hurt the one you love and i love you so i'm killing you today" "don't look at me--don't look that way i didn't plan on killing you today god's the one who wants it" "i thought--a goat, some vegetables, oh anything but killing you" "i couldn't have a better son i love you you always hurt the one you love and i love you" this hurts me more than it hurts you

gather all your boys and girls all your sons and daughters send them to the Holy Land drop them in the water (one, two, three) see you've got a daughter, too she is sweet and swarthy our god sayeth unto you, "have no gods before me" (one, two, three) close your eyes the night is softly sleeping all the bombs are safe in daddy's keeping even you were fashioned in His image even you even you some of you
7.
saw a little sliver of a story about your boy if you blinked you would miss it and it looked anyway like a million stories we've seen before snow is falling, and pretty, and all the toys that you wrapped are just sitting in a pile on the floor, like a million stories "he's a good kid" you say like he hasn't gone away saw the little sliver of a story about your boy you were brave and forgiving but you looked like you never would look the same way at snow again

about

The title of the old marine biology book that is this album's (near) namesake said everything to me about who we are. I know that "Lower Creatures" refers to invertebrates. But it reminded me that we (humans) always have to be at least a rung up the ladder from something else, even if it's a jellyfish, hah! It's a disease that leads to things like war (which happened to be going on in Iraq and Afghanistan when I wrote this album). Crazy, and unfortunately for some, fatal.

about

Rachel Taylor Brown Portland, Oregon

Rachel was born in Portland and lives nearby with her beloved husband Jay. She makes disturbing yet ultimately sensible songs you can sometimes dance to.

She sees loads of ugly and beauty in the world. Trying to capture that sweet and sour thing in a song is what she’s mostly trying to do.

She records with audio midwife and dear friend Jeff Stuart Saltzman and his cats.

Thanks for stopping by!
