about

NOTE: 7 small winter songs CDs are SOLD OUT: will update when the next run is available.

7 small winter songs. I wrote these songs in one day and Jeff and I recorded them in three, in the middle of recording Half Hours With the Lower Creatures. It started as a kind of joke/challenge I made to a friend, who declined to participate. I suggested we each try to write 10 holiday songs in a single day. I decided to plow forward and did write 10 songs in all, but wound up recording just these seven. I had to relearn the songs just to record them, and later, to play them live. It's a strange feeling to write things so fast you forget them an hour later! I've grown to really love these little songs that started on a whim. I like the little bit of melancholy in them, but also the memories of snow, warmth, cold, and all the stuff of the holidays. p.s...Jeff's cats were, per usual, a big part of this recording. You can hear Franz in Amsterdam (big jump from the top of the piano to the floor--plop!). Ida is a sweet silent presence throughout.

about

Rachel Taylor Brown Portland, Oregon

Rachel was born in Portland and lives nearby with her beloved husband Jay. She makes disturbing yet ultimately sensible songs you can sometimes dance to.

She sees loads of ugly and beauty in the world. Trying to capture that sweet and sour thing in a song is what she’s mostly trying to do.

She records with audio midwife and dear friend Jeff Stuart Saltzman and his cats.

Thanks for stopping by!
