about

(painting by Edward Lear--The Monastery of Esphigmenou, Mount Athos, Greece)

"Orthodox monks have been living on Mount Athos ever since the 7th century, inspired by the Virgin Mary, who supposedly travelled here in her old age. In the ninth century the Byzantine Empire recognized these monks as the Holy Mountain's rightful residents. In the 11th century the emperor banned all women, after an awkward incident with some local shepherdesses. Ever since, this verdant cul-de-sac has been the sole preserve of a few thousand monks, inhabiting 20 monasteries scattered around the peninsula, plus various caves and cells hidden in the wooded hills between."
William Cook, The Independent

"I once saw an ad for a gay man's cruise that included a visit to Mount Athos. An island with no women? Sounds O.K. to me."

lyrics

MT. ATHOS
I'm trying to get to heaven, but there's a woman in the way
There's a woman in the way of men on their way

I'm trying to get to Jesus, but there's a woman in the way
There's a woman in the way of men on their way

I'm trying to get to Allah but there's a woman in the way
There's a woman in the way of men on their way

I'm trying to get to Buddah but there's a woman in the way
There's a woman in the way of men on their way
Hey

about

Rachel Taylor Brown Portland, Oregon

Rachel was born in Portland and lives nearby with her beloved husband Jay. She makes disturbing yet ultimately sensible songs you can sometimes dance to.

She sees loads of ugly and beauty in the world. Trying to capture that sweet and sour thing in a song is what she’s mostly trying to do.

She records with audio midwife and dear friend Jeff Stuart Saltzman and his cats.
